This procedure is for vacuum filling an Epson type virgin empty cartridge from the top. Our other fill procedure for virgin empties, fills from the bottom. If you are using a pigmented ink not made by MIS, then this is the safe way to fill virgin empties. It avoids by-passing the internal filter screen in the cartridge.

What you will need to do this. . . . The Virgin Vacuum Filling Kit contains, the tube seal, the Y Adapter, the blue clamp, 4" of tubing, the end fitting, a sharp needle, a 30 cc syringe and 20 rubber sealing balls. It comes pre-assembled and can be used multiple times (see below to purchase). Vacuum pump is not included, please purchase separately.

The Procedure -

1.    Do not remove the yellow pull tab on the top of the cartridge.  And do not puncture the clear material on the bottom of the cartridge covering the exit ports.  This procedure is for a VIRGIN EMPTY CARTRIDGE ONLY.

2.    Make sure you have the small piece of tubing (tube seal) on the end of the Y Adapter.  Then push and twist end of the Y Adapter into the cartridge fill hole.  This is the large hole on the top of the cartridge. Make sure you have a good connection here. Don't push so hard you break something, but hard enough so it will not come loose on it's own.

3.    Attach the fitting end to your vacuum pump. You must have a vacuum pump, similar to the one shown on our website. Pull back on the vacuum pump several times to create a vacuum inside the cartridge.

4.    Now, slide the blue clamp over the tubing, right next to the Y Adapter, so that air can not get back into the cartridge. It takes a little finger strength to do this. Make sure you have pinched off the entire tube.

5.    Attach the sharp needle and fill your 30 cc syringe (included in the kit) with the correct volume of ink for the cartridge you are going to fill. See table below. Make sure you don't have any air in the syringe when you are done loading it with ink.

6.    Next, make sure you have the cartridge oriented as show in the photo above. Work on a flat surface and make sure you are not obstructing the syringe plunger. Quickly insert the sharp needle all the way through the septum material in the Y Adapter. The vacuum in the cartridge will pull the ink out of the syringe and into the cartridge. Do not interfere or touch the plunger on the syringe when this is happening.

7.    When the syringe is empty, disconnect it from the tubing. Pull the Y Adapter out of the cartridge and insert a rubber ball (included in the kit) in the fill hole in the cartridge. You don't have to worry about the orientation of the cartridge at this time, the critical phase is over. So, put the cartridge in its normal position. Use the flat part of a screw drive blade to force the ball into the hole, so that it is just below the surface of the cartridge top.

8.    You are done, just clean up is left. Wash out the Y Adapter, syringe and needle with warm water and store it away or get ready for the next color. You can use the cartridge immediately if you need to, or you can store it in its normal position for later use. Don't pull the yellow tab until you are ready to use. This will prevent evaporation of the ink for long term storage.
