Making Prints with MIS UT-R2 B&W Ultratone Inks on an Epson R200 or R220

Paul Roark has provided detailed instructions on how to use the MIS inks with these printers. The Epson driver can be used with the R200 or R220 and the output can be adjusted using the printer controls provided by Epson on the standard driver (Mac or PC). Photoshop can be used as the printing software, but it is not required. This is what we call the Easy Approach.

For the more sophisticated B&W enthusiast, the R220 can be used with ICC profiles when printed with Photoshop Elements 4.0 or the full version of Photoshop. Users looking for the very fine details and control will find what they need with this method. If one wishes to make their own profiles, this can be accomplished with Roy Harrington's Quadtone Rip and "Create ICC" software along with suitable instrumentation like the Gretag Macbeth Eye One Photo spectrophotometer.

Both methods produce fantastic looking prints. Follow Paul's recommended settings and paper selections for the R200 printer or the R220 printer.

If you choose to use the ICC profile approach, you can download the ICC files that Paul has created. After you unzip the file, be sure to read the Readme.doc file. Click here to learn where to store your ICC Profiles on your computer.

If you are using matte paper, then put in an Eboni black cartridge (R2-T0481-K). If you are using glossy or semigloss paper, put in a Photo black cartridge (R2-T0481-PK). The inks in the color cartridge do not have to change, they will work on matte or glossy papers.

The Ultratone inks are all extremely archival. Our tests indicate that they will far exceed 100 Wilhelm equivalent years. The fade resistance data from our Atlas Weather-O-Meter will be published shortly.

Do not mix these inks with other Non Ultratone inks. For refilling or Continuous Flow Systems, you must start with virgin empty cartridges. Provided this condition is met, no flushing or purging of the printer is needed. One or two cleaning cycles will remove any color or non Ultratone ink from inside the print head. These inks will not clog or damage your printer if you follow this advice.

Epson Stylus Photo R220         Under $100 The R220 replaces the similar R200 printer. The cartridges used are exactly the same. The Epson Stylus Photo R220 is a great 6 color hextone printer for making beautiful Black & White prints using the MIS UT-R2 B&W inks. MIS offers prefilled cartridges, bulk inks, a CFS unit and there is also spongeless refill kit available for this printer.
