CONTINUOUS FLOW SYSTEMS FOR THE C84, C86 AND C88
If you are a frequent printer or doing some production work, then we recommend you purchase a MIS Continuous Flow System
for your C82, C84 or C86 printer. This will save you a tremendous amount of money. The cost to operate a CFS is at least 10
times less than using cartridges. If you only print occasionally, then do not get a CFS. If left idle for 3 or 4 days
at a time, CFS units can start to develop problems. Our AUTOPRINT program
(see CFS Page- halfway down) can be used to prevent problems from occuring,
provided the printer and its computer remain powered.

WORKFLOW INSTRUCTIONS
Making Prints with MIS EZ B&W Ultratone Inks on an Epson C84 or C86
This is EASY. Photoshop is not required. Great B&W prints can be made with any software that can print an image.
There are many to choose from, Paint Shop Pro is our favorite. The inks are
not variable tone inks. The Neutral inks are for making neutral prints and the Warm inks are for making
warm prints.

C84 Settings
Start with the best image you can get. It can either be a color image or a grayscale image, it does not matter. Use the
Epson printer advanced properties to make these settings...
Matte Papers
- Print Media = Plain Paper
- Print Quality = Best Photo
- High Speed = Off
- Sliders for Matte Papers = Contrast -15, Brightness -5, all others zero
- Color Management for Matte Papers = Automatic (see print dialog)
- Archival Paper Choice - Epson Scrapbook paper (also known at Epson UltraSmooth or PremierArt Fine Art Hot Press). For
proofing or a lower cost matte paper, use Epson Enhanced Matte (not truely archival).
Glossy Papers
- Print Media = Glossy Photo Paper
- Print Quality = Best Photo
- High Speed = Off
- Sliders for Glossy Papers = Contrast -10, all others zero
- Color Management for Matte Papers = Automatic (Don't use the ICM No Color Adjustment on the C84)
Read Paul Roark's notes he sent us when he first used the UT-EZ ink
on the C84.

C86 Settings
Start with the best image you can get. It can either be a color image or a grayscale image, it does not matter. Use the
Epson printer advanced properties to make these settings...
- Print Media = Will vary with the paper being printed. See Pauls Recommendations.
- Print Quality = Best Photo
- High Speed = Off
- Sliders = zero to start with
- Color Management = Color Controls, gamma 1.8 unless stated otherwise
For the C86, Paul has spent some time developing detailed recommendations for a number of different papers.

C88 Settings
Start with the best image you can get. It can either be a color image or a grayscale image, it does not matter. Use the
Epson printer advanced properties to adjust the sliders.
The C88 workflow is a little more sophisticated than the C84 and C86 workflow. You must read and understand
Roark's instructions before you will get the perfect print.

Going Beyond Perfect -
Try experimenting with different paper settings to see the effect. Also try moving the sliders for
making minor adjustments. If the C, M, Y sliders are all moved the same amount right or left, the effect is to
vary the amount of ink that is delivered to the paper.
If you use the ICM, no color adjustment settings, the prints will come out darker.
Be sure to let the print dry before judging the color or tones. If you need a good step wedge
to work with, you can download the one we use.
There is an excellent forum called
Digital B&W, The Print. The forum discusses all digital technologies related to
making monochrome prints from digital sources, including the MIS ink sets and
workflows. If you are using MIS inks or plan on using them, this is a great place to
find additional information and to contact current users.

Information about the Inks
If you are using matte paper, then put in an Eboni black cartridge (EZ-T0321-K). If you are using glossy or
semigloss paper, put in a Photo black cartridge (EZ-T0321-PK). The 3 inks in the color cartridge do not have
to change, they will work on matte or glossy papers. If you use MIS Universal black (MK), be aware that the
of MK is not considered as archival.
The Ultratone inks are all extremely archival. Our tests indicate that they will far exceed 100 Wilhelm equivalent years.
Take a look at the fade resistance data.
Do not mix these inks with other Non Ultratone inks. For refilling or Continuous Flow Systems, you must start with
virgin empty cartridges. Provided this condition is met, no flushing or purging of the printer is needed. One or
two cleaning cycles will remove any color or non Ultratone ink from inside the print head. These inks will not
clog or damage your printer if you follow this advice.

Epson Stylus C86
Under $100
Epson Stylus C88
Under $100
The C88 replaces the similar C86 printer. The cartridges used are exactly the same, even though
Epson's part numbers for the C88 carts are different, the C86 carts will work fine.
The Epson Stylus C88 is the ideal multi-purpose printer for the home and home office. It
makes beautiful Black & White prints using the MIS EZ B&W inks.
MIS offers a CFS unit for this printer.
There also is a refill kit available for this printer.
