the ink and workflow are available. Click on the check mark for details about the ink-printer combination. Following
the tables you will find information describing the inks and their application.
These are the Epson printers we support for making digital Black and White inkjet prints. Other Epson printers may work, but we do not
have workflow procedures for them.

Ink Definitions - a guide for selecting the correct Black and White inkjet ink
UT - Ultratone
UT is a variable tone ink for 4 color or 6 color printers. A cool toner ink is present in these inksets for controlling warmness.
Warm, medium warm, neutral and cool prints can be made with this inkset using Photoshop adjustment curves. Photoshop adjustment
curves are provided. The warm curve suppresses the cool toners. The natural warmness of the carbon pigment yields a warm
print. The amount of cool toner is controlled to produce medium warm, neutral and cool prints. These curves can be
modified by experienced users for infinite variability between warm and cool. UT inks will print on matte papers or glossy
papers provided the correct black ink is selected. Use Eboni black for matte papers and Photo black for glossy or semi gloss
papers.
UT2 Ultratone for 890, & 1280
UT2 is a second generation Ultatone inkset developed by Paul Roark specifically for the Epson 1280 printer. Like the
UT inks, it also is a variable tone inkset. It can produce tones from full sepia to full cool. There are 30 workflow
curves provided for a number of papers to produce prints with sepia, warm, selenium, neutral and cool tones using the
Photoshop curves provided. The unique feature of UT2, is that it can be used without applying Photoshop adjustment
curves. By manipulating the color control sliders in the Epson print driver, warm and neutral prints can be made
with any software that will print images. It does not require Photoshop. UT2 inks will print on matte papers or
glossy papers provided the correct black ink is selected. Use Eboni black for matte papers and Photo black for
glossy or semi gloss papers. The Eboni and Photo black inks are the same inks used in the UT inkset.
Note: UT2 is very similar to UT. UT2 produces full sepia, works better on glossy paper, and has
Easy Black and White inkjet capability.
UT2 Ultratone for 1290
We have substancial feedback that the UT2 inks work well with the Epson 1290 (European version). The prints come out
just slightly darker than on the 1280 printer. No separate curves for the 1290 are planned, use the 1280 curves.
EZN & EZW Ultratone - No Workflow Required
EZN and EZW were developed for the C82, C84 and C86 printers and do not require Photoshop adjustment curves. These inks
are intended for use by those that just want to make beautiful Black and White inkjet prints, but either don't have Photoshop or
don't care to learn it. Any software that can print an image can be used. The control for great Black and White inkjet prints
is built into the inkset when used with an Epson C82, C84 or C86. There are two inksets available, a neutral inkset (EZN) and
a warm inkset (EZW). These inks are available in cartridges or in bulk for Continuous Flow Systems. EZN and EZW inks
will print on matte papers or glossy papers provided the correct black ink is selected. Use Eboni black for matte
papers and Photo black for glossy or semi gloss papers.
Ultratone FS & FSN
These are the equivalent versions of our older FS Black and White inkjet inks, made with Ultratone. There are only 4 inks in these
inksets. To use them with a 6 color printer requires the older R9 driver, which many of our customers own. The
Ultratone version has superior fade resistance over the older version inks. These inks are NOT variable tone inks. The
FSN is neutral and the FS is warm. They can be used on matte or glossy paper provided the correct black ink is
selected. Use Eboni black for matte papers and Photo black for glossy or semi gloss papers.
Ultratone 7 (UT7)
This ink is very similar to the UT2 inks, in that they will print on matte and some glossy papers. It is for the
7 color Epson printers (2200, 4000, 7600, 9600). The 2200 curves were developed
by Paul Roark. It uses the Epson driver and Photoshop adjustment curves (Mac or PC Windows). The inks will produce
variable tone prints ranging from full sepia to cool and anywhere in between. The curves for the 7600/9600 were developed
by Bill Schwab, one of our beta testers. This inkset can also be used with the Bowhaus or Quadtone Rip software.
Ultratone for 2200 - Bowhaus Configuration
This ink is for the 7 color Epson 2200 printers It comes configured for use with Bowhaus or Quadtone RIP software (Not Epson Driver).
The inks will produce variable tone prints ranging from full sepia to cool and anywhere in
between. This configuration will not work with the Epson driver. It contains both Photo Black and Eboni Black at the
same time, so it can print on matte or glossy papers by turning off one or the other of these two inks. The Eboni is
kept in the Light Black position. The inkset contains both cool toner and sepia toner. Prefilled cartridges are
available for the 2200 printer. Do not confuse this with UT7.
UT-R2N & UT-R2W FOR EPSON R200 & R220 PRINTERS
The MIS UT-R2 inksets come in 2 tones: R2-N (neutral) and R2-Warm (pure carbon). Both are 100% pigment (no dyes), black and white
inksets for the Epson R200 and R220 printers. These inks are available in cartridges or in bulk for Continuous Flow Systems. UT-R2 inks
will print on matte papers or glossy papers provided the correct black ink is selected. Use Eboni black for matte
papers and Photo black for glossy or semi gloss papers.
Ultratone Black Inks
All of the above Ultratone inks use the same two black inks, Eboni black for matte prints and Photo Black for glossy
or semigloss prints.
