MIS C84 Easy B&W CFS
Installation Procedure
|
|
Prerequisite -
Before starting this installation, you MUST test your printer to make sure it is printing 100% correctly. If this
is a new printer, follow the Epson procedures for installing and testing the cartridges. It must print properly with
these cartridge before the CFS can be installed. The best way to do this is first print a Nozzle pattern, using the
printer utility software provided by Epson. If the nozzle pattern is perfect, then print 5 copies of the
MIS PURGE4.TIF image using the Plain Paper and 360 dpi settings on the printer. The Purge4 image can be found
on the diskette included with your system or download it from our website. All
5 pages must print without banding or skipping (white spaces). If your printer can not do this, do not install
the CFS. Run some cleaning cycles until you can pass this test.

Tools & Materials Needed -
MIS CFS System, Ink and a working Epson C84 printer
Alcohol and some paper towels
Small screw driver, thin flat blade
Some paper to print on
|
| 1. |
Fill Carts if Needed - If you purchased your system prefilled, then go to Step 2. If the cartridges are empty
(no ink in tubes), then vacuum fill the cartridges with the
ink that came with the system or the ink of your choice. Follow the instructions that came with the MIS Vacuum Pump.
When this is complete, go to Step 2.
|
| 2. |
Free Carriage - On the printer, push the Ink button (this is the one that has ink drop icon on it) to
move the cartridges to the Replace position. While in this
position, pull the power plug out of the wall.
|
| 3. |
Remove Spring Holding Cartridge Lid to Housing - Use your small screwdriver and carefully remove this spring
from the left side of the Cartridge Lid. The Cartridge Lid is the hinged piece that covers the Epson cartridges. Be
careful not to break the small plastic piece the loop on the spring is attached to. Don't lose the spring, it may fly
when it comes loose. See photo below.
|
| 4. |
Remove Cartridge Lid - Use your small screwdriver again and wedge the tip between the housing and the Cartridge Lid. Gently twist the
screwdriver and push on the lid, toward the left. The lid will become free so it can be removed. Don't over twist
or pry with the screwdriver, it may break or damage the printer housing.
|
| 5. |
Remove Epson Cartridges - Remove the Epson cartridges and PARTIALLY install the CFS cartridges. Do not push the cartridges all the way down. We
do not want the seals on the bottom to be punctured until the tubes have been installed in the bottles.
|
| 6. |
Install Clear Plastic Tube Clips - Install the two Tube Clips as shown in the photo below. Place the Tube Clips
in between the ribs as shown. The opening
on the clip should be UP. The top of the Tube clip should be up as far as possible so it touches the printer housing and
can not go any higher.
Use a small flat blade screw driver to slightly open the Tube Clips so the tubes can slide in place. Don't force the clip
open more than needed, or it will be bent and not hold the tube firmly. Position the tubes so the black tape on the
tubes is centered in the Tube Clips. It is important that tubes be as shown in the photo. They must be kept up
as high as possible. Note: the Yellow tube should be on the top, upward in all clips.
|
 |
| 7. |
Install Final Tube Clip - Clean and dry the printer housing with alcohol and place the right hand Tube Clip
as shown below. Note: the Yellow tube should be on the top, upward in all tube clips. Once the tubes are securely
inserted into the Right Hand Bracket, un-web the tubes from the right edge of the bracket to the end so that each
tube can be independently installed into its bottle. The tubes are easily un-webbed by just pulling them apart,
no tools are required. Don't go too far.
|
 |
| 8. |
Install Tubes In Bottles - If your system was prefilled, cut the tubes just above the light blue pinch clips. You
will lose about 1/2" of tubing, this is OK. If you ordered an empty system you will not have any pinch clips to
cut off. Cut the end of the tubes on a 45 degree angle so they are pointed. Note: the Yellow tube should be on the top,
upward in all clips. Don't waste any tube length in doing this.
Arrange the bottles next to the printer, magenta is in the back, yellow is in the front. The sequence from front to
back is as follows...
| Magenta |
Black |
Cyan |
Yellow |
| This is correct order 8/12/04 |
| |
Install a Drilled Cap on each bottle. Insert the tube into the bottle so the tube reaches the bottom of the bottle.
There must be 3 1/2 to 3 3/4 inch of tubing inside the bottle when you are finished. Don't put the wrong color tube
into the wrong ink bottle. A little alcohol on the tubes will make it easier to slide the tube through the hole in
the bottle cap top.
If you are installing a B&W system, pay close attention to the labels on the bottles. Each ink is marked with an
M, K, C, or Y. These letters correspond to the ink positions, magenta, black, cyan, or yellow, even though the inks
are not color. Follow the same order as described above for the color inks.
In the package you received, there are 4 black Velcro circles, hook and loop. These are used to attach the bottles to
the printer. Clean the printer housing and bottles with alcohol and wipe dry. Keep the hook and loop pieces together.
Peal off the paper backing on one side to expose the adhesive. Place the Velcro circle either on the bottle about halfway
down, on the side opposite of the label. Peal the other piece of paper backing off, keep the two halves of the Velcro
together on the bottle, with adhesive exposed on one side. Now, press the bottle against the printer, so the Velcro is
trapped between the printer and the bottle. Pick your positions so the tubes don't get stretched too far.
|
|
| 9. |
Finish Cartridge Installation - Push the cartridges down all the way until they click. Make sure they are
properly aligned and down all the way.
Double check the installation by sliding the cartridge holder from far right to far left. There should not be
any interference. The carriage should slide smoothly back and forth. At the far left the tubes may touch the cartridge holder
slightly. This is not a problem.
Make sure the tubes are pulled up as far as possible in the twin tube clips. The tubing should not touch the corner
of the cartridge holder as it goes by these clips. Also, make sure there is no slack in the tubes just before the final
tube clip. At this point the tubes should have a half twist before they enter the final tube clip. This will keep the tubes
out of the way.
Next push the cartridge holder all the way to the right as far as possible.
|
| 10. |
Plug the printer back in and turn on the power. Run a few cleaning cycles until you have a perfect nozzle pattern.
The printer is now ready to use. After 4 cleaning cycles, if you have problems getting a perfect nozzle pattern, let the
printer rest overnight, and try again in the morning.
|
| 11. |
On the second day, try cleaning cycles again. If an ink does not print. Remove the tube from the bottle, lift the cartridge out, and suck 3 cc of ink out of the bottom of
the cartridge using the bottom fill adapter and syringe. Then reinstall. If you have all colors printing but you are
having problems getting a perfect nozzle pattern after 4 cleaning cycles, then let the printer rest overnight again and
try a few cleaning cycles in the morning.

Maintenance Tips for a CFS -
There are a couple of things you should know that will keep your system running trouble free.
These systems work best if they are used everyday. If you are an infrequent printer or only print once or twice
a week, then you should install our AUTOPRINT program (download for free from our
CFS page). Autoprint will make a printout using our Purge4 or any image everyday as long as you leave your computer and
printer turned on. As an alternative, if you are going to be away for a few days, buy an automatic timer and install it
on your printer
power line. Set it to turn on the printer once per day. When the printer first comes on, it will do a cleaning cycle.
This is equivalent to making a Purge4 print. With the timer installed you will not have to leave your computer on. Most
hardware stores carry these timers, they are not expensive.
If you have to do cleaning cycles, do them in groups of 3. Print a copy of Purge4 or Purge6 after every 3 cleaning cycles. This
resets the printer firmware so that you get a short, long, and medium duration cleaning cycle. If you don't do this, all
you will get is the short cleaning cycle after the 3rd one. Running several short cleaning cycles will cause nozzles to
drop out. If you are still having problems after 4 cleaning cycles, then let the printer rest for a few hours
or overnight and try again later. This has worked on many Epson printers in the past. It gives the air bubbles in the ink
a chance to rise to the surface and get out of the printhead.
Don't let your ink bottles get empty. Refill them when they are at the 1/4 full level. Before pouring new ink into your
bottle, transfer the ink that is left into a clean glass or jar. Then wash out the CFS ink bottle with soap and water. Then
refill with leftover ink and new ink. This keeps algae from building up on the walls of the bottle and causing premature
ink failure.
