Epson Printers C70/C80/C82/950/960/2100/2200 Cartridge Refill Procedure
Identify Which Cartridge-
The GG Ninestar cartridge is an alternate compatible sometimes used in our C80, C82, or 2200 CFS units. The refilling of these carts is done differently than all others. To identify if you have a GG cart, peal back the label on the bottom of the cart. If you see 2 rubber plugs, then it is a GG cart. Follow the procedure below for refilling.

How to Refill
  • Reset the chip with the MIS SK168 Universal Chip Resetter.

  • Use a sharp 20 ga needle and a 20 cc syringe. Fill the syringe with ink.

  • Hold the cart in its installed orientation, with vent hole up.

  • Insert the needle into the rubber plug identified above as the one for refilling. Keep the cart in the upright position, not upside down. Go in deep enough to reach the other end of the plug, about 1/4 inch. If you insert it too far, it will hit plastic and stop. This does not cause any internal damage. Pull back a little if this happens.

  • Slowly inject the ink. When it is full ink will appear at the vent hole on top. Pull back on the syringe just slightly to prevent ink from flowing out the vent. Remove the needle from the plug. Don't let the plug come out of the cartridge. The volume of ink you can inject will vary depending on how much was left inside when you started.

  • Do not tip the cart upside down or lay it on its side, or ink will come out the vent hole.

  • Let the cart rest in the upright position for about 30 minutes. While resting, don't let any absorbent material like paper towel or cloth touch the exit port. This will wick out all of the ink. After the wait period, install it in the printer.

TroubleShooting:

Nozzle Problems
About the only trouble you will get into on these cartridges is nozzle problems. If you clean the heads using the Epson utility software, this will normally restore missing nozzles. If you have done more than 3 consecutive cleaning cycles, let the printer rest for 2 hours minimum and try it again. The C80, C82, and 2200 are very sensitive to excess cleaning.

After 3 cleaning cycles, print a copy of our Purge4.tif image. Do this on the plain paper, 360 dpi settings. Print 5 copies. You should not see any white spaces or banding. This is to validate that the nozzles are all working.
If after doing a lot of cleaning cycles, and you are not getting anywhere. Remove the cartridge and suck some ink (1 or 2 cc max) out of the bottom of the cart. Use a clean syringe and the MIS Bottom Fill Adapter.

Put the cartridge back in the printer and run a few more cleaning cycles. If this proves to be unsuccessful. Try a brand new Epson cartridge. It is possible your cartridge may have become damaged, but it is unlikely.

How to Kill an Epson Printer
Because the print head is inside the printer and not on the cartridge, Epson printers have more risk of dying than do HP's or Lexmark's. If the print head has to be replaced, they normally cost as much as new printer. So keeping the print head working right is very important.

First rule, don't leave your printer with out a cartridge installed. If you are not able to finish refilling a cartridge, put it back into the printer empty. Don't push any buttons on the printer and don't turn it off. Resume your refilling the next day.

When you do a nozzle check, and you have missing nozzles, this is a warning that should not be ignored. If you leave your printer for several days (shorter if you are in a hot dry climate) the traces of ink left in the missing nozzle can dry and harden. If this happens, your print head is ruined, and the printer is, for all practical purposes DEAD.

Don't let this happen. If you have missing nozzles, get after them and get them going again. If necessary call Epson and get there assistance. (They will not help you with refilling, so don't mention it.) Try the tips we have given above. Call us, we may have a few more things you can try before taking your printer to the under taker.
