Step 1: Locate the 4 fill hole plugs on top of the cartridge. Use the
yellow tool to drill holes in the fill plugs on top of the cartridge. Alternatively, you
may pop the plugs out of the top.
Step 2: Using a toothpick, insert it into each hole to determine the
correct color for each chamber (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) . Mark it on the
cartridge. Use a piece of tape to write on if you need it.
Step 3: Tape over three of the four holes with electrical tape. This is to
prevent accidental contamination of a chamber with the wrong ink if you overfill a chamber.

Step 4: Inject black ink into the black chamber, SLOWLY. Be sure to remove and
re-insert the needle a few times to expose the entire sponge to the ink. When it wells up,
it is full. Always keep the needle as deep a possible.
Step 5: If you have only one syringe or needle tip, wash it clean with warm
water. Using the correct color ink, fill the next chamber slowly. Be careful not
to over fill. Keep the other chambers covered with tape. Repeat process for the
other chambers until they are all full. One drop of ink in the wrong chamber will ruin
the cartridge.
Step 6: Remove the tape and set on the inside of a paper cup until all dripping
stops. Expect a few drips -- If there aren't any drips, the sponge is not saturated
and ready to print.
If you plan on storing the cartridge, cover the fill holes, otherwise, leave
them open. Put the cartridge in a zip lock bag with a moist paper towel or if you have
Canon Sealing tape or an Orange head protector, put it on the print head. Don't put
any other type of tape or material against the print head.

BC-20/22/23 TROUBLESHOOTING
- Print is streaked or banded -
This is caused by blocked or clogged nozzles. If you did not start with a cartridge that
you know was working perfectly, this can easily happen. The ink dries rapidly and can clog
one or more of the nozzles. There is about a 80% chance you can unclog it using boiling
water.
Hold just the print head portion (where the ink comes out) in a shallow pan of boiling water
for about 3 minutes. While it is still hot, take the cartridge to the printer, install it and
run some cleaning cycles. You may have to do this 3 or 4 times to get all the nozzle open. Do
not use any ammonia or alcohol in the water. Distilled water is best.
- Nothing comes out of the cartridge, not a drop -
Of course this is not good. If you know the cartridge was working before you started, try the
hot water treatment described above. If it still does not show any signs of life, then it
most likely is an electrical problem. The only solution is a new cartridge.
- Colors are not right -
On the BC-22e, minor color contamination can occur by the wrong color ink being wicked up
externally through the print head. Normally, this can be cleared by printing large solid
blocks of color, but it must be done right away. If you wait 'til the next day, the ink will
spread through the sponge and ruin the cartridge. Use your graphics software or word
processor. Draw a large rectangle (8x10) and fill it with cyan, magenta, yellow or black.
One color at a time. Print about 20 pages of each color. If it does not clear up, it is
time for a new cartridge.
