1.   You will need a 60 cc syringe, 1/2" 20 ga Luer Lock Needle, orange pony clamp, needle nose pliers, wide mouth ink container, and ink to do this refill. See Accessory page if you don't have these items.

Locate the hole in the center of the end of the cartridge. It is a small hole about 1/8" in diameter with a black rubber seal just below the surface of the cartridge. Stand the cartridge on end so the fill hole is pointing upward. If you have one of our orange clamps, it is handy to use to keep the cartridge standing upright.

2.    Next, find the small 1/2" long needle and insert it into the center of the black rubber seal on the cartridge. Hold the needle with your fingers, and feel for the dimple in the center of the rubber seal, then push the needle through the seal. If the cartridge has been filled or used before, there will already be a hole there. Do not make a new hole and do not enlarge the one that is there.

3.    Push the plunger on the syringe all the way to the bottom, then attach the syringe to the needle, keeping it inserted into the cartridge. A pair of needle nose pliers is recommended to hold the needle while the syringe is twisted onto the needle. Flip the cartridge upside down (cart on top of syringe) so all the old ink will collect at the exit port. Pull back on the syringe to extract any ink or air remaining in the cartridge. This will collapse the bag on the inside of the cartridge.

Detach the syringe from the needle using the needle nose pliers to keep the needle from turning. Leaving the needle in the cartridge. Either save or dispose of the extracted ink and foam in the syringe. We do not recommend mixing the left over ink with the fresh ink. You can keep it in a container and use it later if there is enough. It has to be stored for 24 hours to get rid of all the gas and foam. Do not mix non MIS ink with fresh MIS ink.

Wash out the syringe with warm water to get it ready for filling the cart. Push the plunger to the bottom to be sure all the water is out.

4.    Pour the MIS ink into a wide mouth container (a clean cup or glass) and fill the syringe to the 60cc mark with ink. Make sure you have no air or foam in the syringe. Attach the syringe to the needle, keeping it inserted into the cartridge. A pair of needle nose pliers is recommended to hold the needle while the syringe is twisted onto the needle. Slowly inject the 60 cc of ink into the cartridge. Use both hands to push the plunger down. Don't apply force to the cartridge or you will damage the rubber septum. When the syringe is empty, detach it from the needle using the needle nose pliers to keep the needle from turning. Leaving the needle in the cartridge.

5.    Refill the syringe with another 60 cc of ink and reattach it to the needle. The cartridge holds 220 cc of ink, so you will have to do this 3 times with 60 cc and then 40 cc on the last load. After all the ink has been injected, keep the needle in the cartridge and pull back on the plunger to remove any trapped air that may be in the cartridge. When you pull back on the plunger, you should get a small amount of ink back into the syringe, about 2 to 5 cc. When you pull back on the plunger, also start removing the needle from the cartridge. Getting the excess air out of the cartridge is very important.

Caution... If your cartridge was not totally empty, you may have put too much ink in. This is not good and will lead to problems later. If you think you put too much in, the sides of the cartridge will seem expanded and you will be able to squeeze the bag by pressing on the sides. If this is the case, you can extract or remove some of the ink with the syringe until the expansion reduces.

If you have a gram scale or postage scale you can judge how much ink is in the cartridge by the weight. A virgin empty weights 147 grams (5.2 oz) and a factory filled cartridge weights 370 grams (13 oz). Your refilled cartridge should weigh between 365 grams (12.9 oz) and 375 grams (13.2 oz).

6.    The cartridge is now refilled. It should not be leaking anywhere. External leakage means that the rubber seal is not holding or that the foil bag inside the cartridge has been damaged. Both are fatal. If it is not leaking, clean it off and set it aside. If it is leaking, you will need to get a new one or a different one that is not damaged.

7.    Clean the syringe and needle with warm water and prepare to fill the next color cartridge. Which color you start with makes no difference. Repeat the above procedure for the rest of the cartridges that need refilling.
