Filling the SO20118 (black) and the SO20122 (yellow) cartridges.

1.   Locate the hole in the center of the end of the cartridge. It is a small hole about 1/8" in diameter with a black rubber seal just below the surface of the cartridge. Stand the cartridge on end so the fill hole is pointing upward. If you have one of our orange clamps, it is handy to use to keep the cartridge standing upright.

2.    Pour the ink into a small cup and fill the syringe to the 60cc mark with ink. This is done before you attach the needle. Make sure you have no air or foam in the syringe. Next, find the small 1/2" long purple needle and insert it into the center of the black rubber seal on the cartridge. Hold the needle with your fingers, and feel for the dimple in the center of the rubber seal, then push the needle through the seal. If you use a longer needle don't go in more than 1/2", you may puncture the bag on the inside.

3.    Attach the syringe to the needle, keeping it inserted into the cartridge. Inject the 60 cc of ink into the cartridge. Detach the syringe from the needle, leaving the needle in the cartridge. A pair of needle nose pliers works great for this.

4.    Refill the syringe with 36 cc and reattach it to the needle. The cartridge holds 96 cc of ink, so this is the last syringe full of ink. After it has all been injected, keep the needle in the cartridge and pull back on the plunger to remove any trapped air that may be in the cartridge. When you pull back on the plunger, you should get a small amount of ink back into the syringe, about 2 to 5 cc. When you pull back on the plunger, also start removing the needle from the cartridge. Getting the excess air out of the cartridge is very important.

Caution... If your cartridge was not totally empty, you may have put too much ink in. his is not good and will lead to problems later. If you think you put too much in, the sides of the cartridge will seem expanded and you will be able to squeeze the bag by pressing on the sides. If this is the case, you can extract or remove some of the ink with the syringe until the expansion reduces. If you have a gram scale or postage scale you can judge how much ink is in the cartridge by the weight. A virgin empty weights 73 grams (2.6 oz) and a factory filled cartridge weights 183 grams (6.4 oz). Your refilled cartridge should weigh between 173 grams (6.1 oz) and 183 grams (6.4 oz).

5.    The cartridge is now refilled. It should not be leaking anywhere. External leakage means that the rubber seal is not holding or that the foil bag inside the cartridge has been damaged. Both are fatal. If it is not leaking, clean it off and set it aside. If it is leaking, you will need to get a new one or a different one that is not damaged.

6.    Clean the syringe and needle with warm water and prepare to fill the next color cartridge. Which color you start with makes no difference. Repeat the above procedure for both the black and yellow cartridges. When both of the cartridges are filled, proceed with the filling of the cyan and magenta cartridges.

Use the color arrows to determine which side to put the light color into.

7.   Locate the holes in the center of the end of the cartridge. There are two small holes about 1/8" in diameter with a black rubber seal just below the surface of the cartridge. Stand the cartridge on end so the fill holes are pointing upward. If you have one of our orange clamps, it is handy to use to keep the cartridge standing upright.

Use the color arrows to determine which side the light shade goes into. Don't get confused with the back of the label, that shows just the opposite. Use the arrows only for determining which side is the light and which is the regular color.

9.    Attach the syringe to the needle, keeping it inserted into the cartridge. Inject the 60 cc of ink into the cartridge, slowly. The 60 cc should take about 2 to 3 minutes to inject.

10.    Each side of the cartridge holds only 60 cc of ink, so only one syringe full of ink is required.

This is not good and will lead to problems later. A virgin empty weights 120 grams (4.2 oz) and a factory filled (both sides) cartridge weights 270 grams (9.5 oz). Your refilled cartridge should weigh between 240 grams (8.5 oz) and 270 grams (9.5 oz).

11.    This side of the cartridge is now refilled. It should not be leaking anywhere. External leakage means that the rubber seal is not holding or that the foil bag inside the cartridge has been damaged. Both are fatal. If it is not leaking, clean it off and set it aside. If it is leaking, you will need to get a new one or a different one that is not damaged.

12.    Clean the syringe and needle with warm water and prepare to fill the other side or the next color cartridge. Which color you start with makes no difference. Repeat the above procedure for both the cyan and magenta cartridges. When all of the cartridges are filled, install them in the printer and run a few cleaning cycles until you have a perfect nozzle check.
