This procedure will work fine for about 3 refills. Then you will start having problems
getting all the ink back in the cartridge. Ink foam builds up in the sponge preventing
complete refilling. After 3 refills, use our
Residual Foam Refill Method for better results. Most of the steps are the same, except
the ink extraction step (# 2).
Get a place to work where you can spill a little ink and not ruin anything. Spread some
newspapers down and have plenty of paper towels handy. Make sure you have good
lighting. Here is what you will need:
- MIS-Syringes (10 cc) or (60 cc)
- Bottom Fill Adapters (MIS-BADPT)
- Bottles of ink for each color (4 - C/M/Y/K, 6 - C/M/Y/K/Pc/Pm)

WARNING: DO NOT PUT A CARTRIDGE WITHOUT A CHIP ON IT INTO THE PRINTER - IT WILL
CAUSE FATAL DAMAGE TO PRINTER !!!

| 1. |
Get Set Up -
Get the empty cartridge you are going to fill and all the above materials together on your bench.
Unwrap the syringe, remove the protective cap, and attach the clear Bottom Fill Adapter to the
syringe. It is a twist lock connection. Twist it on with your fingers, so it is tight.
|
| |
| 2. |
Extract Left Over Ink -
Collapse the syringe to zero, then insert the tip of the Bottom Fill Adapter into the bottom
of the cartridge and push so the poppet valve in the cartridge will open. Keep the
cartridge oriented as shown in the photo below. Pull back on the syringe plunger to extract
any left over ink. Pull the syringe plunger all the way back to 10, very slowly. Liquid
ink will come out at first, then just foamy ink. If this is your first refill, you do not
have to seal off the top of the cartridge during this process. You will feel some resistance
when you pull back on the syringe, but it is not constant.
If this is your 4th or 5th refill, it is best to use a 60 cc syringe so you can create a vacuum
to help extract the foamy ink residue from the sponge. To create a vacuum you will have to
seal the top vent holes with electrical tape. For more information on this process, see our
Residual Foam Method.
Put the ink you have extracted in with the new ink in the bottle of the same color. Clean the
syringe and bottom fill adapter with warm water so there is no trace of the ink left. Now, repeat
the process for each color. There is nothing wrong with this ink. There is no sense in just
throwing it away. The foam will dissipate back into liquid, it is not a problem.

| 3. |
Load the Syringe with Fresh Ink -
Clean the syringe and bottom fill adapter with warm water. Make sure the syringe plunger is
down all the way, then insert the tip of the bottom fill adapter into the ink bottle and
pull ink into the syringe. Pull in 1/2 to 1 cc more than is shown in the table below.
Hold the syringe, needle pointed up, wrap some paper towel around the tip of the Bottom
Fill Adapter, and carefully push on the syringe to remove any air trapped in the top of
the syringe. If you push too hard, ink will shoot up to the ceiling, so be very gentle.
Now that the air is gone, adjust the volume of ink in the syringe so that you have the
amount shown in the above table. Hold the syringe tip over the open ink bottle and push
the syringe plunger until you have the bottom of the rubber plunger at the right mark.

| |
| 4. |
Inject Ink into Cartridge -
When looking at the cartridge in its installed position, the colors are, from left to right,
Cyan, Photo Cyan, Magenta, Photo Magenta, Yellow. Hold the cartridge being filled at
about a 45 degree angle, front up as shown below. Push the tip of the bottom fill
adapter firmly into the exit port and slowly inject the ink into the cartridge. Go slow
towards the end and watch the top of the cartridge. When you have about 2 cc left to
inject, start leveling the cartridge slowly as you inject. The idea is to get all of
the ink in before it starts coming out the vent holes on the top. If ink appears at the
vent opening on the top, stop injecting immediately. Quickly clean up any visible ink
so it does not jump over into an adjacent vent hole opening.
|
| |
|
If you have trouble getting the full amount of ink back into the cartridge go back to step
#2 and this time seal of the top vents on the cartridge with tape so you can create a vacuum
to get more of the foamy left over ink out. Un-do the tape before injecting fresh ink. A
larger 60 cc syringe will work best for extracting the foamy ink.
|
| |
| 5. |
Repeat Process for all Colors -
If you only have one syringe, wash out the bottom fill adapter and syringe with warm
water, then inject ink in the other chambers. Be careful to get the right color in the right
chamber or the cartridge will be ruined.
The black cartridge fills exactly the same way. See table below for correct volume of ink.
|
| |
| 6. |
Aging and Installation -
Don't turn the cartridge upside down. Put the cartridge down on your work surface or bench,
put a match book or something about 3/16 inch thick under one end of the cartridge, so it
is level. Let it stay in this position for about an hour (overnight is better). Then it is
ready to install in the printer. |
| |
| 7. |
Resetting the Chip -
There are two ways to reset the chip, Swedish Reset or the Universal Chip Resetter. If the
chip does not get reset, the printer will tell you the cartridge is empty and it will not work.
Here is an explanation of each reset method....
- Swedish Reset - This method requires that you have another set of good cartridges
to use to reset the ones you have refilled. Works with PC's and Mac's. Please go to the
Swedish Reset Instructions for more
information.
- Universal Chip Resetter - The SK168 ($19.95) is a hardware device that you hold
against the chip on the cartridge and it resets the chip back to full. It is a stand alone
device and does not require a computer to operate. Works with PC's and Mac's. Please go to the
SK168 page for more information.
