Fade Resistance of MIS 870/1270 Dyebased Ink -
The fade resistance of the MIS 870/1270 dyebased inks needs to be clarified. It is
something that has been misunderstood by others.
The MIS 870/1270 dyebased inks are equivalent to the Epson inks in every way, except
that we have corrected the missing component form the cyan ink that makes the
Epson inks shift towards the orange in the presence of ozone. THESE ARE NOT
ARCHIVAL INKS. They are just ordinary dyebased inks that have a more expensive
dye in them that is just slightly more fade resistant than the older Epson
inks. These inks will fade just like the older dyebased inks. The amount of
improvement in the fade resistance is very minimal. However, Epson refers to
these inks as lightfast. Because they call them lightfast, we also use the word
on our website, but it is misleading. All of the lightfast characteristics come
from the Epson paper, specifically the HW Matte and the Premium Glossy. Wilhelm
says they have a permanence of 26 years and 10 years respectively. We have not
verified this formally other than some window testing and some exposure in our
UV chamber. On papers other than the ones Epson claims are archival or fade
resistant, all bets are off on how long the ink-paper combos will last when
exposed to sunlight or UV radiation. We are not making any claims or guarantees
about the MIS 1870/270 dyebased inks other than to piggy back on Epson's claims with
their special papers.
For more information on the permanence of Epson's ink/paper combinations, read this
article from Canon/PCWorld.
If you read the above article, please be aware that we have tested Epson 2000P ink/paper
side by side with our Perpetual Archival and Exact Match Archival inks, using our new
enhanced yellow, and our inks outlast the Epson 2000P by about 5%. These tests were
conducted in simulated Miami sunlight using an Atlas Weather-O-Meter. These are pigmented
inks.
Because of the backward compatibility of the new dyebased inks, we now use them in all refill kits
for Epson printers. They are also used for the similar printers that have been
introduced since the 870/1270, including the C40, 680, 777, 785, 790, 890, 895, 1280 and 1290.
The ink for the new C80 printer is not the same. It is a new pigmented ink from Epson
named "Durabrite™". We will introduce an equivalent ink to this in the near future.
The inks for the C60, 810 and 820 printers are the same lightfast ink that is used
in the 870/1270 printers. They are not listed because we do not have a refill kit
available for them at this time. We will introduce these refill kits when there is
solution to the electronic chip on the cartridge that prevents reuse of the cartridge.
